Ways to Stay Fit While on the Road

Long hours spent sitting, coupled with too many unhealthy meal choices leaves many truckers packing on the pounds. Just because eating right and exercising is more difficult while on the road does not mean it isn’t possible to stay in shape. Follow these tips to help you better manage your weight and enjoy a greater fitness level.

Use your Cab as a Gym

You don’t need fancy equipment in order work out, nor is a gym membership required. Using a set of dumbbells, you can easily perform a number of weight-lifting exercises inside your cab. Check out this video of a fellow trucker who has developed his own fitness routine for abs and strength training. Who knows, you may be inspired to create a similar program of your own.

Sneak in Exercise

When you are limited on time and resources, you’ll have to be creative at “sneaking” in exercise whenever you can. Some ways you may want to consider include:

  • Performing a few sprints while at a rest area or truck stop
  • Jumping rope when washing your clothes at a laundromat
  • Doing a few squats, lunges, or jumping jacks before getting back into your truck after a stop

High Intensity Interval Training or HIIT is an ideal form of cardio for truckers because it takes very little time, virtually no equipment, and can be performed anywhere. In five to seven minutes, you can burn plenty of calories and increase your cardiovascular fitness and endurance.

Make Working Out a Priority

It’s all too easy to make excuses for not working out. Perhaps you are uncomfortable exercising, or feel too exhausted after a long day behind the wheel. Regardless, you must make working out a priority or you will never get in great shape. Once you take the first step, you’ll find that keeping up with a fitness plan really isn’t as hard as you had imagined.

Small changes will go a long way toward helping you stay fit. Incorporate even a few of these ideas, and you will be looking and feeling better in no time.
