4 Lifestyle Tips for Semi-truck Drivers

Semi-truck drivers do not have it easy; their occupation is more of a lifestyle than it is a job. Trucking impacts everything from cooking to exercising and from budgeting to eating.

So what are some tips that would benefit a semi-truck driver's lifestyle?  Let's explore four different life elements that drivers can change so as to help them from being driven crazy.

1. Eating. What to eat is challenging for semi-truck drivers. Fast food restaurants tempt drivers to choose them because of their cheap prices and convenience instead of healthier, simpler, and tastier alternatives. Most semi-trucks have microwaves and refrigerators which can expand a driver's eating options. Having a truck driving job can put on weight really fast which is why it's important for drivers to stay cognizant of what they eat and how much. Calorie counting is a beneficial habit so as to help drivers make better and healthier eating choices. Drinking water instead of high-calorie, sugar filled beverages is also a necessity.

2. Exercise. If a driver is sitting and driving all day, how can they get any exercise? Well - they can! According to Men's Health Magazine, there are 7 rules of on-the-road fitness. Drivers should exercise vigorously for 15 minutes a day -- everyday. They should maintain 75 to 85% of their max heart rate during a workout. This maximizes fat burning. Drivers should work multiple muscle groups simultaneously and eat right after exercising. It's very important that drivers eat breakfast and then eat every three hours after that. Drivers should always keep healthy snacks in the truck. It's convenient to eat what's available, so they should only have good food choices available. It's also beneficial to record nutrition and fitness goals, accomplishments, and activity. 

3. Cooking. Now that drivers know what they should and shouldn't eat, how do they prepare it? Again, most semi-trucks have microwaves and refrigerators so that they can easily prepare their healthy, nutritious, and tasty food selections. But, according to an article in Roadmaster, it's essential for drivers to have a crockpot. The article states, "Last minute meal choices are often bad ones. Healthy eating only happens if you are willing to plan and prepare your food in advance, and a slow-cooker or crockpot is basically essential if you want to do that."

4. Budgeting. One of the best things a driver can do is plan a menu. Drivers will more likely chose unhealthy foods if there is not a menu planned. A menu keeps drivers from wondering what they're going to eat all of the time. The price of the food items a driver puts on their menu can help them with their food budget for the week (or even the month). They can save money if they eat most of their meals in their truck in addition to choosing fresh fruits and vegetables with cheap protein.

Drivers should set financial goals and save for them. According to CareersInGear.com, "Once [drivers] know how much money [they] need to save each week, [they should] write down how much money [they] estimate [they] will earn a month. [They should total up their up] debts, food expenses and miscellaneous bills. [They should subtract their] debts from [their] income to see where [they] stand. If [they] are coming up short, [they should] cut back on...costs."

So by making these changes, thus improving their trucking habits, drivers end up living healthier and more productive lives as they keep on trucking in the fast lane on this road that is life.
