May Trailer Orders Up 26 Percent Over One Year Ago

FTR estimates net trailer orders for May at 16,600 units, up a solid 26 percent year-over-year. For the 12-month period from June  2016 through May 2017, total trailer orders total 253,000 units.

Increased Production, Decreased Backlogs

Manufacturers responded by increasing daily production three percent from April to May. As a result, order backlogs declined seven percent. Backlogged orders are a full 15 percent lower in volume than one year ago.

Seasonal Adjustments

May orders were off 17 percent compared to April, but this decrease was expected for two reasons. First, orders typically decline on a seasonal basis. Second, March and April order volume was stronger than expected. Despite the decline in overall month-to-month sales, lowbeds and liquid tanks held their own, with each of these two categories showing a modest increase in sales. At the same time, refrigerated trailer orders did soften during the month.

FTR’s Vice President of Commercial Vehicles, Don Ake, observed that May’s overall results met expectations. He asserted that, “It still looks like a great year for the trailer market.”

Outlook Good Into 2018

As freight volumes continue to increase, trailer sales should remain solid into 2018.
