Distracted Driving Causes Accidents

Perhaps one of the greatest safety threats for truckers is fatigue. Fatigue causes distracted driving, a leading cause of trucking accidents. Being on the road for days at a time with very few breaks and often not enough sleep is a disaster waiting to happen. You can ensure your truckers do not fall victim to these accidents by following these semi-truck safety tips to avoid fatigue:

  1. Get more sleep. Yes, this seems simple enough but can be difficult if you suffer from insomnia. A few tricks to beating insomnia include avoiding stimulating activities that will keep you up at night. You can also experiment with changing the time you go to bed at night to see if this improves your sleep patterns.
  2. Proper nutrition. Drivers can improve stamina and overall health by following a diet including the four major food groups--meat, fish, vegetables, fruits, grains and dairy products. A healthier body will be better able to fight fatigue.
  3. Eliminate caffeine and tobacco products. Both caffeine and tobacco are stimulants (although tobacco is a stimulant which is followed by a stage as a depressant). Both products can interfere with sleep which will decrease alertness and reaction time on the road.
  4. Avoid drinking alcohol. Drivers should avoid drinking alcohol when they will be on the road soon. Alcohol is a depressant and can cause fatigue, sleep disturbances and reduce alertness.
  5. Exercise. When you sit for hours at a time behind the wheel of a semi-truck, your muscles are not in peak condition and your stamina suffers allowing fatigue to take over your body. Exercise can increase stamina and alertness which will help you avoid an accident on the road.

Trucking is a tough job and drivers face day-to-day stresses that can cause fatigue and contribute to accidents. Take some time now to alter your daily activities that are leading to fatigue and avoid future accidents. For more information on truck safety issues, visit the Truck Safety Coalition.
